RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT.

[From the Nelson Examiner.] “ It will be in the recollection of our readers, that a few weeks since we called their attention to the state of things in New South Wales, and recalled to their memories the sneers and sarcasms of the Australian press at our first efforts to establish responsible government in New Zealand. At that time we stated that the first responsible ministry in New South Wales had resigned, and a second had been appointed, which, from appearances in the political horizon, we felt inclined to predict would not last long. Our predictions have been verified; for no sooner had the new ministers met the Assembly than a vote of censure was carried against then, and they felt themselves bound to resign. The old ministry, with one or two new names, have been re-appoin-ted, and have gone back to their constituents. Every change in the ministry involves a new election. G reat exertions are being made by the friends of the late ministry to prevent the present members from being returned. We look for the result of the elections with great interest.” From these few remarks it will be seen that Nelson is not the only place in an unsettled state, or that has had so many elections in so short a space of time. It is the natural consequence of a new order of things which after a time will take a more settled course,

and elections will become less frequent. In the mean time, let the aim of each and everyman be, to further the peace and prosperity of the country as much as it may be in his power.
