A HINT TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.

(To the Editor of the Auckland ExunTiner.)

Sir, —In the late number of. the “ New Zealander” it was very judiciously remarked that the town engines were quite useless in case of the last fire, but not because the place was not approachable, as the “ New Zealander” says, but on account of the want of water which is severely felt all through the city and suburbs; and of what good are engines to the community if there is no water to supply them with. The whole city might be burnt down without any material, (mind, I say material) opposition, and it strikes me very forcibly that the first step that ought to b.e taken is, to secure our personal property from such a distructive element. If some of the Auckland representatives would think of their constitutents,) and their own interest thereby,) they roust certainly would have considered the circumstance worth mentioning, but reviewing the lukewarm carryings on .formerly, we ought not to be-astonished at any of the past occurrences. What is the good of mending roads and expending the monies for such (as you may call them) nuisances to the eye and feet. Why not. commence operations on one of those hills in the immediate vicinity of the city, provide force pumps, a reservoir, and pipes, and supply every street with water, so that if our property is endangered we may be able to save, at least, a part of

it. The streets do well enough for the present, look after the houses and stores and the goods that are in them. It in my candid opinion that if Auckland ever shall be a place of note in the Southern Hemisphere it must be safe from the element so detrimental te its progress —I'ntii. Yours, Ac., - Argus.
