PThe Esmsdeugh dredges areiWorking ste* i'y. '--<- ■-*.-■. The Matau dredge is stoppedsi present, for the purpose of having a new screen placed on board. r 'He New "Vincent dredge will be sold by auction at Dunedin next Saturday. The New Biver Molyneux Go's dredge, at present jnoored near Alexandra, will be sold by auction by Messrs Sievwright Bros., at Dunedin, on Saturday next. The dredge is a first-class machine, and is in good working order. Full particulars will be found in our advertising eolumns. The Chicago dredge, after having been dropped down to the lower end of the claim, succeeded in getting on to an excellent run of wash at the first ■ ■ time of asking, the return for last week being within an ace of 4640z. There is every prospect that similarly good returns will be obtained for some time to come. The dredge is working steadily. Says the " Southern Standard ": The trees planted on the dredge tailings at Sheddan's claims are growing vigorously and should soon convert the dreary waste into a pleasant spot again '. Judging by the growth of weeds in the tailings it should not be difficult to obtain a sward of clover or other feed plants on most of the claims where trees are not planted. Basket willows are also spoken of as likely to thrive amongst the stones and silt. A wire from St Bathans states that <* startling and phenomenally rich wash has been discovered in the Vinegar Hill Sluicing Company's claim," the mess sage adding that the wash goes JMwt 9grs to the dish. If this class of wash Eves for any length of time, as is expected, some handsome dividends be declared in the near future. The river has been unsteady during the week, the height at the bridge last evening being Bft 6in above the " normal" mark.

* STAFFORD WAIMEA GOLD [ DREDGING COMPANY. An extraordinary general meeting ' of shareholders in the Stafford Waimea Gold Dredging Company was held at the secretary's office, Alexandra, on ' Friday last, to consider a resolution to the effect that the company be wound up voluntarily, also a resolution that . the liquidators (should the company :':■' enter into liquidation) be instructed to endeuvour to form a new company from among the present shareholders, creditors, or with a capital nots exceeding £3OOO, such new company to be called the New Stafford Waimea _ Gold Dredging Company. The resolu-' tions were carried, and Mr 0. E. Richards was appointed liquidator at a ■*■ remuneration of £2O. The opinion expressed that there would be no '■" reconstructing the company '•- on the basis proposed. In connection H with the resolutions the following circular was issued to shareholders: — «As already apprised through the medium of the press, the dredge has been cloesd down owing to pressure of liabilities, brought about by the un» fortunate accident which happened to tiff - dredge in July last. It is true that ike majority of the creditors have been most considerate, but the total liabilities are heavy, amounting in all to approximately £2000; and your directors are of opinion that it would be better and fairer to all to make a fresh start on a smaller capital, and tins can only be done by Hquidating the present company and forming a new company from amongst the present v rfmreholdere. Your directors still have faith in the claim, and intend taking up their lull quota of shares in the proposed new company; and if the proposals are carried, before going te the expense of forming a new comnanv. vow directors would be glad if Sareholdere would stateif they are nre-ered to fall in with the proposal Jndtake up their quota of shares also, w hieh will be one-third of the number held by each in the present company'y S *lltiifr«hares are subscribed it will * dot *be necessary to call up mejrf/than be sufficient to pay th> Unties J,,} leave a small amount for OTderve '. *&W ' ■■.:■' • ■ ' % DBBDeii??'
