We direct attention to the change of Mr R. R. Hore's advt. The court sits at Clyde on Saturday, and at Alexandra on Monday and Tuesday next. Nine bands have entered for the band contest, which is to be held at Oamaru on New Year's Day. Twenty guests at a wedding in Germ.my were killed by drinking poisonous brandy, which was secretly distilled. The St. Louis exhibition has been closed. The attendance since, the opening is estimated at over twenty millions. We have to acknowledge receipt from the Government Printer ot a bound copy of the N.Z. Statutes, passed last session. It is intended to bring a test case in the colony to decide whether a bona fide traveller has any status under the Licensing Act. s A meeting of the newly-formed coursing club at Ophir will be held on the 15th inst. (Court day), to arrange for the holding of the first coursing meeting, MR J. Smith, outfitter, Alexandra, notifies that, as he is giving up business this month, his large stock of Panama hats, and gents' mercery must be sold. No reasonable offer will be refused. The Alexandra Gun Club hold a shooting match on the 15th inst,, at 25 inanimate birds. Good prize money is offered, and we feel sure that a large number of ahootists will take part in the match. The work of forming the line on the Otago Central Railway works on the Alexandra side of the Manuherikia nver will be commenced immediately after the New Year. Mr Fraser, the contractor for the bridge on the river, will commence work about the same time. The contract for the cartage of material has been let to Messrs Atkins Bros.
A bazaar, in aid of the Vicarage Building Fund, will be held in the town hall, Alexandra, on Thursday and Friday, 15th and 16th insfe. The ladies of the parish and their friends have been working assiduously for some time past, and will be able to present a great variety of goods, both useful and ornamental, which will doubtless meet with a ready sale. The privileges in connection with the forthcoming race meeting of the Alexandra Jockey Club were sold by auction by Messrs, Young, Buchanan on Saturday last as follows : Publican's and Luncheon Booths, Mr F. Gorman, £27; cards, ALEXANDRA Herald, £8 6s; fruit stall, Mr W. Noble, £2 ss; saddling paddock, Messrs Geddes and Co., 10s. ON Sunday afternoon next, the Alexandra Brass Band will play a number of selections on the recreation ground. A collection will be taken up in aid of the family of Mr A. Wilson, of Springvale, who suffered a severe loss on the 28th ult, when the dwelling house and contents were completely destroyed by fire- The secretary of the Band (Mr A. A, Briasco) will be pleased to receive donations to the fund, A fire broke out in the " Clutha Leader" office at Bal clutha on Saturday night last. The front portion of the building, containing printing paper, stationary, 130 cases of type, and other material, was destroyed. The safe and business books were saved. The printing machinery was in another building at the back, and to this very little damage was done. The building and plant destroyed was insured for £450. The Montgomery Specialty Co., played to a fairly large house in Alexandra on Saturday evening last. The programme was a lengthy one, and the company is well worth seeing. Zeno, the juggler, and Professor Parker, the handcuff king, were well received by the audience; while the other performers were particularly good. The company appear again on Saturday evening next, when we bespeak a bumper house. At the Ophir Police Court, on the 30th ult., before Dr M'llroy and Mr J. M'Knight, J.P.'s, Thomas Hussey was charged with assaulting and resisting Constable White while in the execution of his duty on the night of the 29th. After hearing the evidence, accused was convicted and fined 53 1 on the first charge, and £1 on the second, together with costs, makinr a total of £2 .*s 6d. Accused was allowed a fortnight in which to pay the fine, with the option of one week's imprisonment in Clyde gaol. ■Two other offenders were charged with drunkenness on the same night, but, in view of the especial nature of the occasion, the Bench took a lenient view of the cases, and convinced and discharged the accused.
