The Herald. Alexandra, Thursday, November 24. OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TO OMAKAU.
We desire to direct the attention of pur readers to the forthcoming festivities in connection with the official opening of the Otago Central; Railway to Omakau. Tuesday next has been fixed as the day for the function, and particulars regarding the proposed programme appear in another column of this issue. We are assured that the committee who have charge of the arrangements are sparing neither time nor trouble in.their efforts to ensure that the gathering will be one worthy of the occasion; and we feel sure that people from all parts of Central Otago will flock to Omakau on Tuesday to help our friends the' terminus to establish a record in railway-opening celebrations. The fact that the Bight Hon. the Premier is to be present is in itself a guarantee of a large gathering of miners and workers, with whom his name is a household word. If a few infuriated shopkeepers in Wellington did temporarily abdicate the throne of their intellectual power, and hoot the Premier, we can safely assure the' Right hon. gentleman that he will get an entirely different' kind of a reception on his visit to Central Otago, for it is scarcely open to question that there is another man south of the Line who has enshrined himself in the hearts of the workers as "King Dick" has done. We are pleased that he is to be present at Tuesday's opening ceremony, and we are equally pleased that he will be accompanied by his able and popular lieutenants—Sir Joseph Ward and the Hon. Hall-Jones—who may also be 1 assured of a hearty country welcome. It is gratifying to note that the committee has made provision to allow of the little folk of Central Otago participating in the festivities, it having been arranged that all school children and others who care to attend shall get a free ride on the train from Omakau to Ida Valley, returning by the special train which tiie Ministerial Party. >'-& ritleybtniu"' the icon horse will be something for the young folk to look forward to, and we hope thafcparents will make every effort to allow of their children having an enjoyable day's outing.
