Brass Bands' Contest.

The ninth contest under the auspices of the Otago and Southland Brass Bands' Association was held at Gore on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. There was a good muster of bands, 13 taking part in the Quickstep. Locally, a good deal of interest was taken in the contest, owing to the fact that for the first time in its history the Alexandra Band competed, and the belief generally expressel that our bandsmen would acquit themselves creditably was quite realised. The Band was unfortunate in that the draw for places gave tlem first place, and, as in nearly every case the members were appearing at the contest for the first time, the players no doubt •were more nervous and played witl less confidence than would hav< been the case; had they been placec further down the list. Moreover, i heavy gale was blowing at the time which later on died away, to the ad vantage of the other bands. Unde the circumstances, it must be concede that the Alexandra Band did remark ably well. In the Selection the Ban showed to better advantage, tiein with Milton for fourth place, thei score being only four points behind tfc winners.. In the B B-flat bass solo, M J. E, Gftllie secured an easy firs

! scoring 37 points out of a possible 40, and he is to be congratulated on bis performance.
