Association) takes place at Ophir this afternoon. A meeting of the Alexandra Rifles will be held after parade this evening, for the purpose of electing a junior subaltern, During September 2334 persons arrived in the colony and 1224 took their departure. The figures for September, 1903, were 2084 and 1008 respectively. Mr J. Drummey, the contractor, after having completed the necessary excavating work, has commenced the erection of (he additions to the Alexandra Town Hall. The Alexandra Public School Cadet Detachment has been gaaetted and recognised under the regulations published in the New Zealand Gazette of 18th February, 1804 i Mr L: B, Grimstone, manager of the Alexandra branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is at present absent on a well-earned holiday. The relieving officer is Mr M*Gibbon, from Invercargill. It is stated that Mr Horace Bastings, hotelkeeper, of Invercargill, who was for many years resident in the Lawrence district, will be a candidate for the Tuapeka elector* ate at the next General Election.

A verx readable article on " Music" iff reprinted in this issue from the " Otago Witness." It may interest readers to know that the authoress, who writes under the nom deplume of "'Eos Mon," is a young lady, who holds a leading position in Alexandra musical circles. Messrs L. £. Grimstone and J. O'Kanc of Alexandra, are taking part in the Golf Tourney, which commenced at Dunedin oa Tuesday. For the Championship Mr Grimstone was defeated in the first round. Mr O'Kane drew a bye in the first round, won the second against Mr Kettle, but was defeated by Mr Stronach in the third round. A meeting of the Alexandra Caledonian--Society was held on Thursday evening when there was a good attendance of members. The programme for the annual gathering was finally passed, the prize money totalling £65: A Sheffield Handicap (firafo £ls, second £4, third £2) is again included. besides a number of other running eventj*. Thk Government has purchased the Greenfield estate, in the Tuapeka district, for close settlement: The final offer (L 4 an acre) was accepted by the owners, who have reserved the homestead portion (2000 acres). The total area purchased is 22,392 acres.' Negotiations have been pending for a long time over the property, the owners at first, asking considerably more than the Govern*ment was prepared to give, AN elderly man named James M'Gonaell met with a rather serious and painful accident at Hawksburn on the 18th inst. It appears M'Connell was feeding a chaffcntter when one of his hands was taken into the machine, with the result that the hand was severed just below the wrist. The sufferer was taken to the Dunstan Hospital, where he was attended to by Dr Hyde, and afe latest accounts he was progressing as satisfactorily as could be expected.
