MINING NEWS.

The river has been steady at the sft mark during the week, this being die height at the Alexandra bridge last evening. Tbe elevator on the Sandy Point dredge is undergoing a thorough overhaul, and the dredge will not be able to resume work for some litt'e time. It is intended to alter the gearing so that the driving pinion wiil be at the top, instead of the bottom as hitherto. The necessary new gearing has been ordered from Dunedin. Mr Sam Cameron, late dredgemaster of the Perseverance dredges, has appointed master of the Moyneux Hydraulic 'Jo-a dredge, vice Mr Simonsen, who takes charge of tnfi Alexandra Lead dredge.

Mr G. P. Blue, who has been dredgemaster in charge of the Fourteen mile Beach dredge since the* commencement of operations, has been appointed to an important position in Burmah. Mr Blue leaves to-day, *n route for the scene of his future labors. Mr Geo. Poulter is temporarily iu charge of the Fourteen-mile dredge. The Manuherikia dredge stopped ou Saturday night last to allow of some necessary repairs being effected. It is expected the dredge will be able to resume work to-morrow (Friday), The New Fourteen-mile dredge resumed work at the beginning of the week.

The New Halfway House Co., at a meeting of shareholders on Monday evening last, decided to continue operations as against .liquidation, by the narrow margin of one vote. The motion for liquidation was proposed by a lady shareholder. The First Chance Dredging Company intend to bring the Kiver Molyneux dredge (recently purchased by the company) up to the Alexandra bridge, where we understand, the machine will be offered for sale. Mr S. Hoy, the company's manager, is now making preparations for pulling the dredge up the river, and, although the task is a somewhat formidable one, we have no doubt but that it will be successfully accomplished. The Moa dredge is working steadily off Frenchman's Point, within a stone's throw'of Alexandra's main street, and still keeps on the golden, Last week's work resulted in a return of 131oz. A. sheelite gold-bearing reef of considerable extent has been discovered on Matheson's mn at Mount Highky. The outcrop alone covers a very large area and the rights over 132 acres have been secured by Messrs Matheson Bros, and Bruhns. Samples from various parts show a heavy percentage of excellent quality scheelite, and all expenses of procuring the scheelite should be paid by the average of odwt of gold to the ton which tests have re* vealed. Messrs Donaldson Bros., of Golden Point Battery, have agreed to put on the whole of the crushing plant in consideration of a half share.
