MINING NEWS.
The river has fallen an inch or two during the week, and last evening the 4ft mirk was just visible at the Alexandra bridge. Owing to a typographical error, the height last week was eiven as 3£ft. This should have read 4|ft. Mr S. Cameron is now dredgemaster •f the Morniug Star dreJge. This dredge is working steadily, but the company being a private one, the return* are not divulged. The Sandy Point dredge stopped on Thursday last to a'low of some necessary repairs being effected to the elevator. The dredge will, in all probability, not be able to resume work till some time next week. The New Fourteen-mile Beach Company has declared a dividend of 2s 6d per share. It is also intended to strike a call of 2s 6d per share, which will be paid out of the gold. This practically means a dividend of 5s to the eoareholders. The river having again receded to a favourable level, the Sailors Bend dredge resumed work yesterday. The fiioa dredge is working steadily abreast of Frenchman's Point. Work was commenced at the Last Chance Company's Sluicing Oa's claim, Kali Hi I Fat, list week, the water raees having first been cleared out. T e ptddock opened out before the winrer was washed up, with the result that the very satisfactory yield of 1330s was obtained.
The sensation of the week was the magnificent return of 4200z from the Fourteen-mile Beach dredge, and Dredgemastsr Blue is to be complimented on trading the list by such a large majority. The parcel of gold cont lined a great number of nuggety pieces, but was chiefly composed of fetnall round shotty particles, similar in ghnpe to a pin's head. Unfortunately, it was found necessasy to stop the dr-'Jge to allow of repairs being enacted to the bucket lips; but doubtl**a the dredge will put up further big yi-*' *s before the river rise 3 sufficiently to c »mpel her to shut down. After two fruitless attempts the GV.den Bend Mining Company are miking another attempt to reach bottom on their claim at the bend below the Maauherikia bridge. This time it is intended to pat down an incline catting, the material being hauled up on rails by steam power. A Californian lift pump will be used to cope with the water Bores have been put down, when the depth of the ground was found to be 30ft, and it is believed that by tne present method tiie wash will be reached. It will be remembered that in this neighborhood the late lamented Golden Link dredge obtained a return of some 70oz, but was uuable to bottom the lead into the bank.
