MINING NEWS.

The river is steady at 3|f t above the •• normal " mark. The M *a dredge has been pulled up the river, and resumed dredging yesterday near Frenchman's Point. Mr -V. M'Lean, of Nevis, has been appointed dredgemaster of the Loch Lomond dredge.

AMENDMENT OF THE MINING LAW.

The Minister for Mines has circulated his Mining Act Amendment Bill, which provides that, on any public reserve, or endowment, or native reserve mining may be carried on at a depth below 50 feet from the surface, and the Warden, with the consent of the Minister, may grant rights on the surface for ventilating shafts, pumping shafts, etc. It also provides for land occupied for mining being, with the consent of the occupier, reserved for any public purposes. The powers of granting leases in mining townships now held by the Governor, are to be given to the Warden, who, with the written consent of the Minister, may grant any person a 21 years' lease of any portion of the surface of a mining township. It is also proposed to give the Warden power to extend the date of the commencement of works on any mining priviledge for such period as he thinks fit, having regard to the nature and extent of the operations on the claim. There is a provision to the effect that a part only of a mining privilege may be reduced. The right of the holders of mining privileges to take possession of cultivated land is further restricted by a provison that, emn if the Warden, in the exercise of his discretion, authorises the holder of the mining privileges to take possession of the cultivated Grown land, the Warden's order shall only hold good for three months, unless the holder of the mining privilege in the meantime exercises his rights under the order. In the event of mining causing damage to occupied land, compensation must be paid, and it is proposed that such com- J penaation shall be recoverable by a debt.
