MINING NEWS.
The «Mt Benger Mail' says:—The j crew of the Jubilee dredge met toge i iher on their "ship" last Saturday to i take a formal farewell of their drrjgmaster, Mr Ewen Butler. In af" : appropriate remarks Mr J Kitto expressed the regret of the men in losing their master, and referred to the good feeling existing among them. They all wished Mr Butler much success in his new sphere of labor in Burmah, and hoped to often hear from bim and on behalf of the crew Mr Kitto asked him to accept a gentleman's dressing companion as a slight token of esteem and expression of their good wishes for his future. Mr Butler suitably responded, and thanked them all most cordially for the kind things said of him and for their beautiful present to him,
The river remains steady at a little over the 3ft mark.
The First Chance dredge resumed work on Thursday last. The ground is very rough, and a good deal of time was lost during the week owing to the new string of buckets parting, the pins apparently not being strong enough to stand the strain put upon them. Fortunately, the dredgemaster and his crew this time managed to re cover the buckets.
It is expected that the Earnscleugh No 2 dredge, at present undergoing repairs, will be able to resume work about the end of the week.
The secretary of the Stafford-Waimea Company informs us that the dredge will probably resume work next week.
Alexandra. Coal Mining Company.
The annual meeting of shareholders in the Alexandra Goal Mining Company was held in the Company's office Alexandra, on Saturday 27th August. There was a good attendance of shareholders, and Mr Georgo Spencer presided (in the absence of Mr James Kelman, who is on a trip to the Old Country). The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet (read by the secretary, Mr L Ryan), stated that there had been some extra expense during the year, including a second pump which was neoessary in order to take the water out of the dip, and as the workings were getting further away from the shaft it meant more expense. The reserve fund stood rt present at £IOOO, and he was of the opinion that this should be added to, as a new shaft wou'd require to dp sunk sooner or later. As the compac had now been in existence between four and five years he thought that it was about time the shareholders got something out of it. The motion was seconded by Mr Luke and carried. On the motion of Mr Luke, seconded by Mr Young, Messrs Kelman and Pattison were re-elected Directors. Mr C E Richards was re-elected Auditor.
It was agreed that the directors Fees be £SO, and the auditor's fee £5/5 [the same as last year). .
It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Directors to increase the price of coal.
A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
