The ordinary meeting of the Oou, »I, was then held, the same couucillor* being present. The minutes of the previous meetingwere read and confirmed. Inward correspondence waß read ana dealt with as follows : From the Paymaster General, aCvi*» ing that the sum of 10s, goldSeld* revenue for June, had been remictot to credit of the Borough.«-Rec»ivt<L From Mr Budd, clerk of Pree.fey. -ft ian. Church committee requesttSjg tl ■*% a lamp be erected near the etmieh eorner. After some discussion, in whieh councillors expressed the opinion *hi' more lamps were required in the town* it was resolved that a new lamp be erected in.Oroqkhaven-streefc ne r ih© Presbyterian Church, and also one >fc the corner of Ventry and Brandonstreets, Cr Anderson mentioned that tb»" Fire Brigade, in going round the fireplugs, found several of them out of order.
It wa,s resolved that the dayman ks instructed to examine the effect repairs' where necessary. Mt* - On the motion of Or Laidiaw, «e cpnded by Or Schaumann, it was re solved that the Library Committee H* authorised to procure £ll worth o* new books. .It was resolved that the Yjnee-v. Oounty Council be asked if they wouM be willing to allow the Borough Gnun* cilto have the use of their road-grader, and, if so, upon what terms. It was pointed out that, with the assistance of the road-grader, a. con** siderable saving would be made in the formation of streets in the town. It was resolved that the town clerk submit to next meeting a draft o* iiy»» laws in connection wibh the w .terworks.
Before the meeting closed, Or propounded a scheme in connection with the Borough endowment, He said that he was informed by com* pefcent judges that, with land comprised in the endowfa|i*t(c?»;f 500 acres in extent) was well ' mh-u for cultivation. He suggested th.% water from the Obatto CreeK *•*«:« should be supplied to the end wiu"» f and that the latter should be cub uo into, say, ten-acre sections, and taasv .' at a small rental. He believed the , given facilities for irrigating the .laid in the way suggested, the land wou'd be readily taken up, as it was eepeo - ally suitable for fruit-growing and poultry raising. It was desirably in the interest of the whole community, that every encouragement should be offered to intending settlers. After some discussion, in which several councillors supported Or Gregg's views, it was resolved thai the Mayor, Ors Gregg, Schaumann, and Buchanan be appointed a sub»commit« tee to make fuller inquiries and report on the proposed scheme to the aesfc meeting of the Oouccil. The Council then rose.
