MINING NEWS.

During the past week the river mt, been falling steadily, the height *-, *»# Alexandra bridge last evening imui 3§ft. above the " normal "mark. On Thursday last, the Hartley and. Riley dredge had to stop owing to an accident to the winch empire. Rep rY* were executed at the Alexan-U* Foundry, and it was expected tt»n* dredging would be resumed on Tuesday, The N-■«■ Roxburgh Jubilee Dredge ingOompnv has declared a of 3s a shm e. The Uadauuted Sluicing Company (Matakasjui) last week washed up 76tfi | tor afortn'ylit's sluicing. The Rliuuheiikia dredge did no* wash-up last week, as owing to iho great amount of drift travelling it was only occasionally that the dredge could get down to the wash. It seems the* the drift is heavier this year than ia any previous season, chiefly owing !<» the great quantity of debris brought down by the Manuherikia river during the flood some little time since. In the gorge below Alexandra, the Bendigo, First Chance, Sailor'? Bend, Manuherikia and Mot dredges are working steadily. In eaah case, however, the dredges are cane siderably handicapped by the amount of drift that is at present running; but, judging by the state of the river, it may be expected that the drift will soon settle, when the machines will be able to operate to better advantage.
