Accident.
A young man named Daniel M'Donald, employed on the First Chance dredge, met with a rather serious accident on Saturday morning last, whilst discharging his duties on the dredge.. It appears that M'Donald had occasion to ascend the gantry framing, and whilst there laid his hand on the line just at the moment when the dredgr master (Mr Hoy), who was at the winch, let the ladder down. The result wnq ijiat the unfortunate man's hand was drawn into a sheave, and the fingers of the right hand were badly mutilated. Mr Hoy, noticing the predicament in which McDonald was.placed, immediately reversed the engine, otherwise tbe results would have been more serious, The sufferer walked to Alexandra were he was attended by Dr Gregg, and was subsequently taken to the Dungtan Hospital. , It was found necessary to amputate the fourth finger, but it is hoped that the remaining fingers, although badly crushed, will be sayed.
