A Swagger in the Wairarapa has been victimising station holders by the following trick:—He hauls a dog around the sheep station with him, and asks for " tucker" on the strength of capturing a sheep worrier. The station owner orders the dog to be shot, and the visitor, after taking the animal away and tying him up in the manuka, comes back, gets enough provisions and tobacco to last him for several days, gives a graphic description of how he killed the dog, and then moves along with his faithful friend to the homestead of the next sheep farmer. The ruse was lately worked upon Mi W C Buchanan, M.H.R.

Here is a little anecdote from " A Ramble Round the Globe" tyl was going through a prohibition State, and tried to get some whisky from the conductor of the train, 'but without success, ' Can't do it, boss; we're in a prohibition State, and I can't do it.' However, he eventually advised me to try at a store at the next stopping place, and this I did. 'Do you sell whisky ?' ' Are you sick, mister, or got a medical certificate ?' ' No.' Then I can't do it. See, this is a i rohibition State,, so I can't seli it; but I reckon our cholera mixture'! I about fit you. Try a bottle of that., I did, bnt to my great astonishment I received a very familiar bottle, which, although it was labelled on one side • Cholera Mixture : a winetjlasss to be taken every two hours, or oftener if required,' had upon the other side the well known label of a firm of Scotch whuky distillers, whose name modesty requires me to suppress."
