MINING NEWS.

The Last Chance Sluicing Company, Bald Hill Flat, washed up 340z lOdwt sgrs for 14 days sluicing. The First Chance dredge struck an excellent run of wash last week, with the result that she won the handsome

return of 1560z for the week's operations. The dredge, unfortunately, had . to stop early on Monday morning owing to an accident to the lower tumbler. As a new casting had to be ordered from Dunedin, the dredge will not be able to resume work before the beginning of next week. In consequence of the rise in the river, the Moa dredge has temporarily suspended dredging operations. The Alexandra Lead dredge is working steadily. The centrifugal elevator lately placed on the dredge is now working satisfactorily, the angle of the beaters having been altered. Says the " Matuara Ensign ": Quite a flutter of excitement was occasioned among Gore members of the syndicate owning the New Fourteen Mile Dredging Company on Saturday lust, when the news was received that the first wash-up of the dredge under her changed ownership had yielded 3120z lOdwt. The capital of the original company was £16.000. Some time afterwards it was found necessary to issue £6OOO worth of preference shares, but this did not stave off

disaster for long, and finally the concern fell into the hands of the present syndicate for £4500, only 10s per share of which has been called up. Last week's return, therefore, clears off half of the capital of the venture, which is regarded by those concerned as an exceedingly lucky and promising •peculation.
