Valedictory.
On Saturday erening last, a large number of the members oi the Alexandra Rifles met at the Bendigo Hotel, to bid good-bye to Lieut. T. M'Heth, prior to his departure for West Africa, Captain Laidlaw presided. In proposing the toast of the health of the' Guest of Evening/ the chairman expressedregret that was felt by htmself and the members of the; corps at Lieut. M'KJath'a departure. Personally speaking, he would miss Lieut. M'Math's assistance very much, but he was glad to th.injs that Mr M'Math's ability in his professional capacity could not fail to win him success in his new sphere of labour in Africa.— (Applause).—The speaker then asked Ljeut. acceptance of a gold sovereign case and a travelling rug, which had been subscribed by members of the corps as a token of the esteem in which he was held.
I4eut. Can', Serg*. Aequith, Sergt, Glare, ex-Sergt. Watts; and Mr Buchanan alio spoke to the toast, and each eulogised the estimable qualities oi the guest of the evening, and wished him. efery success in the future. The toast Fas drunk with musical honours, and Mr M'Math suitably responded in a neat speech, whjch included much sensible adtiee to mem* bers of the eorps, , Other touts appropriate to the occasion were duly honoured, and an hour's pleasant meeting terminated with the singing of " Auld sang Syne,"
