Sir,—Judging by the many expresrides of indignation and disgust that one may hear wherever ona or two are gathered together, the rttepejaw of Alexandra have como to the conclusion tint their costly water-scheme if nothing ihort of a huge faret. the fact has abo, apparently, struck them with the force of a sledge hammer that the water for the town mains should VOV have been taken from the dry, rabbit, infested, and barren sheep runs of Galloway. I*l} those whq have eyes to see stand oh Alexandra's streets and lift their optics to the almost perpetual snows and pellucid streams of the Obelisk range, from which at one time they had an opportunity of getting their water supply, at half the cost of the present waterless scheme; and, after contemplating the rates they have to pay, and the public debt they have incurred, I will be surprised if they will not acknowledge that they *? all like sheep were led astray in Satan's fatal road,"

Long ago, your Council, after inspection, accepted an option over two heads of water—pure and plenteous—from the Obehsk range; but, alas, not having sufficient confidence in their own j good judgment, they, on the advice of the General, took up a stragetjc pom tion in the mud, where there was no danger of being inconvenienced by the presence of dean water.
