Volunteer Notes.

(By ""Volunteer.")

Thjß parade last Thursday night was the smallest we have had for months, and as a consequence we only had a short drill. This state of affairs is not fair to those who take the trouble to attend, and we should have an hour's drill, no matter if there are only ten men on parade, as anyone can see at a glance that we are not perfect. I hear the officers are presenting three valuable trophies to the corps. The conditions have not yet been definitely arranged ye , but I understand that points are to be given for attendance on parade, drill, and shooting One of the prizes was handed round for inspection On Thursday evening, and to my mind it was a very useful as well as handsome pre-ent—viz., a silver watch. Nobody s- ems to know what the other presents consist of, so we must wait and see. I trust that this will be the means of inducing the men to roll up and compete for the trophies. For my part I am going eyes out for the watch. The officers of the corps do not appear to take much interest in the shooting. I understand they intended putting in an appearance on the range last Saturday, for practice, but only some half dozen men turned up, and not a commissioned officer amongst them. Judging by the scores at the recent match a little practice would do them no harm It should be remembered that the Challenge Shield is to be fired for at Alexandra next year, and we want a strong team to do battle for the corps. Therefore prac tice is urgently required, and if the officers would roll up I feel sure the men would follow suit.

I cannot congratulate the Amusement Committee on their energy. There is plenty of talent in the corps, and the men only want an opportunity of displaying it. I would suggest that the Committee hold a meeting and arrange something for the winter Months. We could have a ping-pong or cribbage tournament, or shooting with the Morris tube, in the orderly room—in fact, we can find any amount of things to amuse us if the matter was only organised,
