The new silt elevator for the Molyneux Hydraulic dredge was despatched from Donedin yesterday. The dredgemaster of the Moa dredge intends to recommence dredging operations at the beginning of next week. The dredge will start at the lower end of the claim below Italian Bend, where good returns are expected. Owing to the stripping of a wheel in the winch, the New Golden Beach dredge was only able to work a little over two days last week, and consequently the return was not a large one. The dredge ia now working ■teadily. ; The Matau dredge is working away iteadily, and is taking a cut up alonjr the western side of the river, including a portion of the bank. The Manuherikia dredge resumed dredging operations at midnight on Sunday. Mr W. Mercer, dredgemaater of the Oairntrodlie dredge, has been appointed to a similar position on the Junction Waikaka dredge, out of 42 applicants, The tojtal gold production of the world from the discovery of America to the year 1901, according to the report of the United States Mint, is in round figures 9,811,000,000 dollars. Pure gold of this value would weigh about 16,272 tons, and occupy a space equal to 27,099 cubic feet. Graphically, this amount could be represented by a solid circular tower of gold 30 feet in diameter and 86 feet high The total yearly world production of gold since 1901 would increase the height of such tower 3ft each year. . *\ Some of the residents of 'Bough Bidge, Otago, are anxious for an extension of the Mount Ida Water Race, it being estimated that work could be found at remunerative wages for thirty or forty men if that were done. Mr Herd man, M.H.R., who communicated with the Department has been informed that, inquiry having been made, it has been ascertained that there is not sufficient water available to maintain a supply for Bough Bidge from the Government water race after meeting the requirements of the miners at Naseby. The Inspector of Mines for the Southern Mining District has forwarded an application from B. T. Symes, of Bald Hill Flat, Otago, for assistance towards extending his low level pros* pecting tunnel to a point underneath which the White's Beef Company left payable stone. The Inspector has been informed. that the application is not within the scope of tin regulations for granting assistance towards prospecting, and accordingly cannot be enter* touted.
The deepest hole drilled in the United States is the oil well of the Forest Oil Company, West Elizabeth, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 5575 feet.
The contractors for raising the 6116/8 Beach dredge have made a ■tart, and see nothing te prevent a cuecessful accomplishment of the task. The Rise and Shine Company's dredges were both engaged in opening out but weak- The No. 1 dredge was opening out towards the east boundary most of the week. The prospects are food, and the machinery running well. The No. 2 dredge was opening out towards the west boundary. The coaster reports that there it a little fine gold all through the wash,
