Drowning Fatality.

A. man named John Humphries, employed on the Otago Central Railway, and a resident of Naseby, was drowned in the Manuherikia River near Leask's, Ophir, on Sunday night, 13th inst. Constable Kennedy removed the body to the ; Shamrock Hotel, and an inquest was held in the Courthouse, Ophir, on 15th inst, before Mr Win Laid law, deputy-coroner, and a jury of whom Mr R Mitchell was chosen foreman*

Evidence was given as to deceased having been seen near the spot where the body was found, under the influenoe of drink, at a late hour on the 13th, but he was quite capable of looking after himself. Constable Kennedy conducted the L.quest for the police. Tue iury returned the following verdict:—laat the deceased John Humphries was drowned in the Manuherikia River while under the influence of drink. The following rider v *?as added:— That deceased may have faller.over the bank opposite Leask's into thei Manuherikia River, and that the Ooucty Council should take steps at once to place an erection of some sort along the bank of the river near Leask's, as it is in a very dangerous state at present.
