MINING NEWS.

The silt elevator whifdi has been erected on the Golden Beach dredge bad a preliminary steam trial on Tuesday evening, and proved itself to be the right thing in the right place. The machinery was manufactured by the Dunedin Engineering Company, from designs prepared by Mr J D Kerr, the engineer of the dredge, who also supervised its erection. Mr Kerr is to be congratulated on the successful carrying out of the work. A description of the plant will appear in next issue. The dredge started work yesterday morni g. Heavy rain fell throughout the district on Friday morning last, causing the Molyneux to rise to the 9:t mark at the Alexandra bridge. The river has since fallen about 18 inches, the height last evening being a little under the 7|ft mark. The New Fourteen mile Beach Company has been successfully floated, and the shares having been allot ed the company has been registered. The dredge and claim, with the electric .1 plant and the water races, were secured at auction to-day by Mr F Duthie, acting on behtlf of the new company. The property was' offered by Messrs Park, Reynolds, and Co, and the sale attracted a very large attendance of dtvdgiug men. The first bid made was for £I,BOO. This was followed by a bid of £2,000 by Mr W F Monkinan, the liquidator of the old company (whose liabilities, it was estimated}, would be amply covered by that sum. The only other bid was that which secured the property to the new company, the price being £2,050, The directors of the Dunstan Lead Gold Dredging Company have declared a dividend (the fourth) of Is per share. Messrs Richmond and Murray's tender for £345 has been accepted for raising the Kiley's Beach dredge, and thoroughly repairing her. The contract is to be completed in six weeks. At the sitting of the Alexandra Warden's Court Last week, the applications of E Appleton, H F Norman. B T Wheeler, Robert Lee, and J C Thomson, for special claims on Galloway, were opposed on public grounds, the petitioners praying that the Warden should refuse the granting of the applications except on the condition that outlets should be provided for, A good deal of evidence was taken, after which the warden said he would visit the ground, and deal with the objection at the next sitting of the Court.
