Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr James Kelinan), Ore Spencer, Ryan,; Buchanan, M'Matb, Laid law, Appleton, Anderson, and Schaumann. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward ' correspondence was read and approved. Inward" correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —From the Treasury, .Wellington, advising that the sum of £6OO, sub sidy on waterworks, had been remitted to the credit of the Borough Fund Account.—Received.' I • —From Mr R. Lewis, asking that the street along his sections be opened across the town race to allow of waggon traffic. On the motion of Or Ryan, seconded by Cr M'Math, it was resolved that a crossing be put over the race near Mr Lewis's.
—-From the Molyneux Hydraulic asking that the Council supply them with water according to agreement The letter also pointed out that during tiie pest five years the Company had not received water for the full time stipulated by the agreement, and that the Company expected the Borough would make up the deficiency. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Or Schaumann seconded by Or M'Math, that a legal opinion be obtained as to the Council's liability to the Molyneux Hydraulic 'Company for the non delivery of water. . - —From Mr R, Ross, complaining of the state of upper Tarbert-street, the sand and dust from which caused a considerable amount of annoyance to residents. He requested that, this portion of the street should be watered, say, two or three times a week in dry weather. The letter also complained that during the recent wet weather, owing to the neglected state of the water-channels, his place and the adjoining places were flooded. He asked that the Council do something to remedy the matter complained of.
—A similar letter was Tead from Mr 0 E Richards, who complained that, whenever rain falls, - the water comes off the higher ground, and- lodges all round bis section for days.
—Mr;J Dewar waited on the Coun cil with regard to the same matter. He stated that, owing to the: defective drainage "of the street, his ground was flooded and .it was impossible to get access to his house except by wading through water. $ After some discussion as to the best means to adopt for draining the street, it was resolved that the Works Committee visit the ground and report to the Council.
The Mayer said that, owing to complaints being made re shortage of water at the Borough reservoir, he had instructed the town clerk and Or Anderson to visit the head of Mr Rivers' race, and report as to the supply coming in. *
It was.resolved that the Mayor's action be approved. The town clerk reported that, in company with Or Anderson be visited, for the second time, the head of Mr Rivers'race, on March 2nd. s The particular object of visiting the race was to ascertain what possibility existed for obtaining an auxiliary supply of water from the Mt. Campbell race. It was found that in this creek there were about ten heads of water, and that the race leading thereto was in first-class order. The dam in Bpeargrass Creek : was then visited, and since the previous visit the dam bad gained nothing—iD fact, at' the rate it" was then emptying {he dam must lose water, as, in spite of the rain previous to the second visit, there was only a stream of barely two heads feeding the dam from Speargrass Creek. Comparing the amount of water, in Campbell's with that in Speargrass, and giving all due allowances for the rain that had fallen, it seemed very evident that Campbell'* Creek was the much more reliable source, and should be utilised.
Some discussion took place on the matter, several councillors expressing the opinion that, when the water ran short in Speargrass Creek Mr Rivers should turn in a supply from Campbell's Greek <-'■ : ' ' Eventually, it was resolved that Mr Rivers be notified that the Council desires him to take proper steps to conserve a supply of water for the Use Of the Borough. —A letter was read, from Mr P M Fink, complaining, that an outhouse on the section adjoining his was causing a nuisance. The building had been rebuilt, hut had not. been shifted. It was pointed out that Dr Ogston had ordered the removal of-* the outbuilding referred to to a different portion of .the section. llt was resolved that Dr Ogston be | informed as to the action that has been I taken to carry out his instructions.
It was resolved that the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances be again directed to the nuisance', caused by bicycle riding on footpaths, and that he take immediate stops to abate the nuisance. - H J The Mayor said that a reply had not yet been received from? the Alexandra Lead Company with "regard to the lease of the Borough water-race, but he understood that Capt. Sundstrom, one of the directors, would visit Alexandra shortly to confer with the Council. v It was resolved that the Mayor, and Ore Spencer, Buchatan, and Schaumann be appointed a sub-committee to consult with Gapt. Sundstrom on his arrival. • ; - '* «*; The statement of balances was read, showing a total debit balance of £539 ftfld; % :'■-';" . :: "/I ■■':
