Volunteer Notes.

[By « Lyddite."] A few members of the company met last week to wish our late Lieutenant Oallaghan farewell and success, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Tne Shooting Oommittee has now got fairly on the move, and matches are being arranged for regularly, which is as it should be. The more matches the better the shooting should become, and this is a most important item in a volunteer's training. I should, however, like to see more men go in for these matches. . The Goldfields Challenge Shield is to be fired for this year at Arrowtown, and the committee have already picked 12 men to practice. These men get a certain amount of free ammunition, so there is no excuse for non-attendance.. I understand there is to be, a volunteer dance on Thursday, 3rd March, in order to help expenses of the trip. This trip costs the corps about £2l, which is a heavy item when finances are low. Next year this match is fired at Alexandra, lam glad to say recruits are coming in pretty freely a.gain, and it looks as if the company was going to go ahead strongly this season. They are now in a position, having, practically, with this year's capitation, got nut of debt. The uniforms are paid off, and a good orderly room built, and it now only lies with the men themselves to continue what has been so far a successful corps. There is now a rumor of war, and no one can tell when New Zealand may require her defenders.
