Vincent County Council.

The following concludes our report of the last meeting of the above council:— ■•*: :

A telegram was handed in from Sir J 6 Ward, informing the council that he would see to-morrow as to vdte for Hawea track.—Received. An auctioneers license was granted to George Fache. ..'*. The Inspector of Nuisances' report was read and adopted. Or Rutherford: These reports are more satisfactory than they used to be formerly. The council went into committee to deal with accounts and charitable aid. The council resumed at open board and read the report of the committee as follows: Resolved —That accounts amounting to £1703 17s 5d be passed for payment. Resolved—That the charitable list be approved. The report was adopted. Cr Pitches moved that the sum of £ls be spent in gravelling Hartepool Street, Clyde. - Cr Butler seconded the motion. Or Kane supported the motion. Or Laidlaw would like to have the opinion of the Engineer as to the necessity of this expenditure, The Engineer stated that what Cr Pitches considered a street was really a railway reserve. There was no street at the back of Mr Naylor's store. It was not therefore the duty of the council to put the present road in repair. Or Laidlaw objected to any such expenditure being made. He would oppose the motion, as there was no street there to be controlled by the council or warrant any expenditure being made in repairing it.

Or Pitches said if it was a fact that this was not a street he would take steps to have it declared as such, as it would be an injustice to the people of Clyde were this present street not in existence. The council has spent money upon the road in the past. Or Laidlaw maintained that the expenditure was not warranted. The fact remained that it was not under the control of this council, and there* fore the council was not warranted in expending money upon this so-called street even in the face of a precedent. The motion was carried after being amended to read that the expenditure be made to cover the gravelling of portions of other streets in the town of Clyde. The Inspector, in reply to a question, said the dayman's time was fully occupied with the water, and but little was being done to the street.

The Chairman: If that is the case the council will have to appoint a man to attend to the water separately and charge the cost to the water account. Cr Rutherford would support the motion. ..

The Chairman: I have to draw the council's attention to the splendid stag's head presented to the council by Mr Clouston. It is, one of the largest heads taken last season in the Hawea district,

The clerk was authorised to convey to Mr Olouston the thanks of this council for his highly appreciated present, Resolved—That the Clerk write to the secretary of the Dunstan Hospital Committee, stating that this council adheres to its action of November last. A long letter was received from John Werner, agent for Chun Dun, anent the eternal question of a road to give access to the latter's residence. The letter was far too long to permit of being favored with space. Resolved—That the Engineer forward the communication to Or M'Whirter, for j?is especial consideration. Or Heaney referred to the grading of a small portion of road near Cromwell. Resolved—That the Chairman arrange matters re grading with the mayor of Cromwell. The Inspector was authorised to carry out the necessary formation of the track referred to by Mr Bell Of Timaru station, and to appoint a man to supervise the work. Cr Heaney said he had paid away all the money voted him for the purchase of small birds eggs. £ls was voted to cover cost of future purchases of eggs and heads of small birds. The council refused to provide the necessary tools for repairing the pipes leading to private residences at Clyde. It was a matter for. private enterprise ; there were plumbers in the various towns. This concluded the business of the meeting.
