Kelman), Ore Spencer, Appleton, Buchanan, Schaumanh, Laidlaw, Anderson, and Ryan. The Borough solicitor (Mr Bartholomew) was also present, The business of the meeting was to consider a letter received ; from* Mr J. Rivers with regard 'to turning off the Borough's head of water to allow of the Stockyard dam being cleaned out. i The Council went into committee, and the whole matter was discussed at considerable length, Knally, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Or Schaujnahn seconded by Or Buchanan, that a letter (of which the following is a copy) be (tent to Mr Rivers:— .'...'

January 16th, Mr Jambs Rivers, Alexandra* ...->. Sik,—ln reply to your letter of the 13th inst, I am directed by my Council to inform you that the Council objects to your departing from your agreement in any manner. You are required to supply the Corporation at all times with one head cf water, fit for domestic use, being excused from so doing only when the race is frozen up or broken away by flood j so my Council cannot consent to your proposed action as they must see that the ratepayers are fully supplied with water. The Council further declines to consent to your sending silt, mud, or slime from the dam, or other foreign matter, down the race, which would pollute the town supply. If repairs are necessary to the race they must be carried out in such a way as not to interfere with our supply. You are bound by your agreement to promply repair the race, and damage caused by the winter frosts should have been repaired before this, There is another matter to which I have to request your attention: Large quantities of thistles are allowed to flow over the race, which are causing the Council inconvenience and expense. We must ask you to see that the race is kept clear of all such obstacles. The water has also been turned off in your race at night on different occasions, This must not continue. '■■{ The Council requires you to carry out your agreement in every particular and will hold you responsible for any deviation therefrom.—l have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant, Frank Young, Town Clerk.
