PRESENCE OF MIND.
There are some stories toid of presence cf mind shown at fires. At the conclusion of one story, a man said: 'Why that's sotting! When Inra3up North I heard of a big fire. I strolled ont to see it. I found an old gentleman half out of the fourth story 1 window, gesticulating and calling for help. Everyone seemed paralysed; no ladder nor escape could reach Lira. Tho crowd said ho must be burnt to death. J rushed forward and said: 'Ho shall not,' I called for a rope, and threw him the end. He caught it. I told him to tie the end round his waist; he did so, and then I pulled him down. Gentlemen, it is true he broke his neck in the fall, but, after all, I saved him from being burned to death.'
