MINING NEWS.

The rain last week caused a sudden rise in the river, which on Saturday last went up to the 16ft mark. The river has been falling since Saturday night, and last evening was at the B£ft mark. The Manuherikia dredge and all the other dredges lower down had to step, and it is doubtful if they will be &h\e to lesume operations this year. The representatives of the Coal Miners' Union met the local employers yesterday afternoon, to discuss matters with a view to coming to an arrangement for a further term (the Arbitration Court award having expired). The meeting lasted some few hours, but the parties failed to come to any arrangement. We presume, therefore, that the Arbitration Oourtwill be asked to make a fresh award. Arrangements are being made to m ut the Molyneux Hydraulic dredge into commission, and operations will be resumed at an early date. The Dunstan Lead dredge, which was stopped on Saturday owing to the rise in the river, resumed work at midnight on Sunday. The sensation of the week was the magnificiect yield of 1158oz from the Hartley and Riley dredge. The dredge, unfortunately, had to stop at i the end of last week, when the river rose. It is interesting to learn that the returns lately won from this dredge - have been obtained from ground over which the dredge previously worked. - The wash is found under a layer of tightly set boulders which was previously believed to be the bottom. The Alexandra Lead dredge has reresumed work at the lower end of ber claim, and is taking up a cut on the eastern side of the river, including ft narrow slice of the bank.

The Moa dredge is working steadily in towards Frenchman's Beach, away from the main current The work of erecting one of Payne and Peck's patent elevators on the JJew Bendigo dredge is proceeding satisfactorily, and should he finished some time next week. In our report of the New Golden Beach Oo.'s dredge, in the issue before last, we omitted to mention that the new elevator trays were made after the design invented and patented by Mr F W Payne, consulting engineer, of Dunedin.

DIVIDENDS. The following dividends have been declared during the week:— Hartley and Biley Dredging Co, 10s per share. New Boxbargh Jubilee Dredging Co, 2s per share.
