Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening- last. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Kelman),'Crs Spencer Schaumann, Ryan , Buchanan, Laidlaw, M'Math, and Appleton. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:
—Mr M Jackson wrote asking if the Council would be prepared to rent water for use at his residence site on the Galloway side of the Manuberikja bridge. Resolved—That consideration of the letter stand over in the Saeatitisne*
A letter was read from Mr Geo Faclie. chairman of the Clyde Town Trust;; inviting the Mayor and councillors to the opening of the Clyde waterworks.
It was resolved to replv thanking the Trust for their invitation. ,—Messrs Allan Dunsmuir, W Parker, and R Atkins wrote asking permission to tap the Borough race with a 1-inch pipe. On the motion of Or Schaumann, seconded by Or M'Math, it was resolved that the requests be granted on the usual terms. ■ • k
A -letter: was read from Mr R M'Connochie, Clyde, re inspection of reservoir plastering contract. It was moy< d by. Cr Laid Jaw, seconded by Or Appleton; and carried That Mr' M'Connochie be appointed inspector of the plastering contract at a enumeration of 10s per day, .' J? ■■•—A letter was read from*>Mr Bennet re waterworks subsidy asked for; and also one from the Undersecretary for Mines stating that the Council's application would be considered when the Public Works Estimates were being prepared. The letters were received, and tjhe town clerk was instructed to reply, thanking Mr Bennet and the Minister for their communications.
—The Stock Inspector wrote notifying the Council that the Endowment must be forthwith poisoned for the destruction of rabbits. ■.■■■%
It was stated that the Endowment had been poisoned in August, and it was resolved to inform the Inspector of the fact, and ask if the adjoining properties were poisoned simultaneously. —Mr P M Fink wrote stating that there was a poplar tree standing about 3ft from his fence, and offering to purchase same at a small sum. • ; :,i>
On the motion of Gr Ryan, seconded by Or Laidlaw, it was resolved that the offer of Mr Fink be refused. •"*
—Mr T. J. Francis made application for the use of the town hall for ope week for the purpose of holding a drapery sale.
It was resolved to grant Mr Francis' application at the rate of £3 for one week of six days.
—The opinion of the Borough solicitor (Mr Bartholomew) with ..regard to residence areas within the Borough was read. * .; *>. Resolved—That the Council offer "no objection to the granting of a residence area applied for by Mr Geo. Hastings on the mining reserve. j - i
—The secretary of the Molyneux Hydraulic Company wrote stating that the water supply had been, short lately, and asking for the full supply. The race caretaker said, he would use his best endeavours to!sendjjcfown an increased supply/- -,;_, ,>; y^ g —Mr 0 W Wilde wrote, making application for the position of Borough plumber, and also offering to instal an acetylene lighting. plant in the town hall. ;:■>•.- .:.-•..
After some discussion, it was decided to defer the question of appointing a Borough plumber, and that consideration of the question of lighting the town hall by acetylene gas be held over meantime. -" ;■;••»»
Sdmef.discusisidn hereltook'?place regarding the prices that are being quoted for laying pipes to ratepayer's premises. The general opinion seemed to be that the price charged (8d per foot) was excessive. 1 It was ■ resolved, on. the jno&cfcof Or Spencer, seconded by Cr Ryan, that the pnquirefrom 'the town clerk of Dunedin the prices -charged there for laying £-inch pipes. ,Tj The Mayor said .he would 'like to see sufficient l|~inch pipe procured so that ratepayers Jiving at some distance from the mains could be supplied with water underpressure. It was decided to ■ ascertain the quantity required, and the cost of same. Regarding the request of residents living in the neighborhood of the malleable-iron pipe line, it was resolved, on the motion of Or.Laidlaw, seconded by Or M'Math, that the Council tap the pipe-line for those desiring-to be supplied with water. ~'..-. —Messrs M'Kechnie; and Fleming wrote requesting payment of - amount still due on contract., r , t ~ < Cr M'Math moved, and Or,Ryan seconded- Ihat Messrs M'Kechnie and Fleming be informed that the pipes have not yet been.properly tested, but that the water will be turned on during the week, and if the Council are satisfied with the pipes, the final payment will be made.—Carried. f - It was resolved that a hose be procured at once, and the water turned into .the.pipes.
Tenders were opened for the fencing in of the reservoir;; and after considering same it was decided not to accept any in the meantime. Cr Schaumann pointed out that portion of Yen try-street was ba3Ffm need of gravelling.
It was decided that the. Works Committee ascertain,. tbefcosfcf if fine Jwork, and report to a meeting held on Friday evening. ; -The statement of balances wag read asf follows:—Dr General Account, £721 19s; Gr Charities ; Account, £ll3 12s 9d ; Cr Interest Account, £297 14s 5d ; Cr Cemetery Account, £SO 10s 4d ; Cr Library Account, £ls 15s 4d ; Cr Contractors Deposits, £59 10s 3d; total Dr balance, £lB4 15s lid.
The following accounts were passed for payment:—F Young, £lO 15sj Central Otago Hospitals Board, £l4 13s 8d ; H Fmce, £2 4s; JD Thomson, 14s 3d ; County Bates, £1 5s 2d; Yincent County (poisoned grain) £1 j J Young, £l7 14s lid ; E Terry, £l2. The Council then rose. I ? *
