Bannockburn.

(From our own Oorresondent.)

The local Rifle Club opened the shooting season yesterday, when a sweepstake competition was fired. The weather was not of the best for shooting, owing to a hazy light prevailing early in the day, and later on a strong breeze sprang up. In spite of these disadvantages, however, some good scoring resulted. Two or three new members put in an appearance, and shot remarkably well. The conditions were 7 shots from the 300 yds and 500 yds ranges. The following are the top scores:—R Ray, 61; J Horn, 60; Captain Grabbe, 60; Jas Orabbe, 59; R Toms, 58. COAL TRADE. Some of tbe Kawarau dredges .have laid up for repairs, and consequently the coal trade is decreasing. However, Mr Gillanders is busy pushing on at an old mine in Shepherd's Creek, where he has found some excellent coal, This pit has been flooded with water, but, having secured a powerful pumping plant, the manager is able to keep the water well in check, and there is no doubt that he will be able before long to prove the extent of the field. TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held in the schoolhouse on the 23rd inst, and was well attended. Mr R Toms took the chair. The report and balance-sheet of the previous year's operations showed that tbe club had a credit balance of about £5 to its'credit. It was decided to procure a complete set of new material for use this season. Tbe club will also set aside £2 to provide trophies to be competed for during the season. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Anderson for the energetic and trustworthy manner in which she had discharged her secretarial duties during the past season, «nd strong efforts were made to induce her to undertake the office for another term; but Miss Anderson could not be persuaded, and Mr H Toms was appointed to the office. I believe that a great improvement will be made in the court this season, which will make it one of the best courts up-country.
