The Otago Central.
Mr E. R. XJssher, district engineer, is" at present engaged in making a flying survey of a line from Chatto Creek, via Springvale, presumably witb the object of ascertaining the desirability or otherwise of continuing the railway line in that direction, as has been suggested in certain quarters. 80 far as we could ascertain before going to press, the trial line is being run via Springvale to Clyde. We yesterday wired Mr Bennet, M.H.R., asking him to ascertain from the Minister what the intentions of the Department were, and in reply wo received the following telegram : " Re survey of Otago Central railway, I understand from the Minister that the. trial line is being run for the purpose of obtaining definite know* ledge with regard to the opinion that has been expressed as to router at present laid down. . I gather frofii the Minister that he does not think the present route can be improved upon, but that he feels. be his duty to run the trial survey referred to.—Jas. Bennet.*'
