Aa he was traveling through she district of Sarawak he heard'from hie guides tliat at a little distance there waa a mountain tribe 'which no Eurepaan or America had aver visited, and straightway he went thither, and ton a day or two found himself at the headquarters of these unknown aborigines. At enae he «iw that they differed from all other natives, of Borneo, and he epant some week's in acquainting- himself with their curious customs and also in studying their aountry. whkth ia entirely-im-known to foreign travelers. In this way he accumulated a mass of new material, which he intend* to give to the world at an early data in tha form of a book. This ia the second journey which Dr. Nieuwenhuia han taken to Central Borneo. Ha first went there in 1898 and explored the aources of the Kapuae and Mahakkam rivers, after whieh he returned to Europe, where he at once obtained an appointment as director of the Botanical garden at Uuitenaorg. In 1899 he went again to Borneo, intending to thoroughly explore the interior ot the country, and it is claimed that in this taak he has succeeded batter than any previous traveler.
