Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present—Crs Spencer (deputy-mayor, in the chair), Schaumann, Ryan, Laid--1 law, Anderson, M'Math. and Buchanan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence was read as follows: —From His Worship the Mayor (Mr J Kelman) asking for one month's leave of absence, as he purposed visiting the North Island. —From Mr R. Hay, r$ waterworks contracts. —From Mr J Bennet, M H.R., enclosing a copy of the proposed Shops and Offices Bill. —From Messrs Murdoch and Co, r« poisoned grain for small birds. —From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that he had forwarded to the i Treasury a voucher for .£74 14s lOd, subsidy due to the Council on rates collected for the year 1902-03. —From the Manager, Bank of New Zealand, Alexandra, stating that the limit of £I2OO applied for as overdraft had been granted, subject to the usual stipulations. —From the Registrar-General, asking for information concerning the Borough for publication in the Municipal Year Book. The inward correspondence was received and the outward approved. Mr J Terry waited on the Council and asked that the matter of opening Kenmare-street be deferred until the water is laid on, as the present race ran through portion of the street and 'throughhis proporty. Moved by Cr Laidlaw, and seconded by Cr Schaumann—That the Deputymayor and the town clerk be authorised to interview Messrs Terry and Short, and make the best arrangements possible, pending the opening of the waterworks.—Carried.
It was resolved, on the motion of Or Ryan, seconded—That Mr Bennet be written to stating that the Council does not approve of the clause in the Shops and Offices Bill making the halfholiday on Saturday compulsory. Resolved- That the town clerk furnish the information asked for by the Registrar-General, On the motion of Or Schaumann, seconded by Or M'Math, His Worship the Mayor was granted one month's leave of absence as requested. Or M'Math said that, in view of the bad state of several portions of the streets, he thought an extra man should be put on for a week or two to assist in effecting necessary improvements. 1 After some discussion, it was resolved that an extra man be employed for a fortnight, and that applications be called, same to be dealt with by the deputy-mayor and the town clerk. Or Ryan directed the Council's attention to the fact that some person had fenced across the road leading to the Molyneux coalpit, through the mining reserve. He moved—That the person responsible for the fencing be notified to remove the fence forthwith. —The motion was seconded by Or Buchanan and carried. Or Buchanan said that, as the Council knew, the Hon the Minister for 1 Public Works had, during his visit to ; Alexandra, promised to have improvements and additions made to the Alexandra Courthouse. As the Public Works Estimates would shortly be brought down, he (the speaker) thought no harm would be done by reminding the Minister of his promise. He ! moved—That the Hon the Minister of Public be written to directing his attention to the necessity for enlarging the Alexandra Courthouse, and reminding him of his promise in this matter ; also that Mr Bennet te communicated with on the same subject. The motion was seconded by Cr Ryan and carried. Resolved—That in future the library be opened only on Wednesday and Saturday evenings for the issue of books. I Tenders for the lease (for unexpired term) of section 1, block vi, and sections 14 and 15, block viii, were "opened. \; After consideration, the tenders of ■Mr L Anderson for section 1, and T M'Math for sections 14 and 15, were 'accepted. i The statement of balances showed a : total debit balance at bank of £215 8s .2d. . The following accounts were passed for payment: —A Maskill, 10s; J •Travis, .£lO 8s ; Otago Central Foundry, £ll 0s lOd ;. W Theyers, Is lOd ; W Bowler, 4s, J D Thomson, 9s ; A Ashworth, £2 7s lOd ; total, £43 Is 6d, The Council then rose.
