Volunteer Notes.
[By "Iyddite."] Oo account of the Spinsters Social g- night, there will be no parade. Volunteers no doubt will enjoy themselves better tripping the *• light fantastic" than in performing some new novement- in the cold and frozen »ir, with which we have been so familiar this last fortnight. The shooting match for the corporals' medal has been postponed until the weather is more suitable for shooting. I am authorised to state that after the above match takes place, the classfiring for the current year will begin, and that no other shooting will be allowed until the. whole of the members of the corps are finishe 1 with their 4eourse. ... '
Wanted—energetic volunteers to repair target*, etc., when the weather breaks. When the corps was .first formed, all the work in connection with the excavation of pits, mound*, etc., Was undertaken by the officers and men. Lately, if an hour's work was required at the range, members wmted some remuneration for, services rendered. This is not as it should be, and as the finances of the corps at the present time do not warrant an outlay at the butte, it seems that volunteers who may hj ive a little time on their hands may help matters along by [putting in an appearance and doing some useful work, under the guidance and direction of the shooting As the corps is selling ammmunition to members at 6d per packet, and losing almost the same sum over the transaction, it seems to me that there is fair ground for asking members to do their share in furthering the inter* ests of the company, and in keeping down expanses; Efficiency badges for three years' service are being issued to the volunteers who have capitated for that term. Up to the present time, none have been received by this company, although there are ten members who are entitled to receive them.
The following is from the "Gazette," dated War Office, April 28 :—«• The Leicestershire Regiment-Leone Sextus Denys Oswald Fraudati-filiue Tolle-mache-Tollemache de Orellna Plantaga* net Tollemaehe | Tollemache." The boys of the Leicesters will just call him " Bugging." It will doubtless be of interest to buglers to know that a new bugler's manual, entitled "Trumpet and Bugle Sounds for the Army, 1903," has been issued from Wellington, an advance copy having been received by Colonel Robin during the present week. The hook contains bcth field and peace calls, with the proviso ( that the peace calls may be used on active service if deemed necessary. The difference between the new calls and. old ones, especially in the peace calls, is very great, and as illustrating this it may be mentioned that the old familiar camp sails, usually known as " Home to the cook house door, boys," and *• Tho cfficera' wives," etc, are now things of the past. Instead of these theie is now an officers' dinner call, a sergeants' dinner call, and a first and second call for men's meals.
