The Island Picnic.
The "Wanganui Herald," in a moment of desperate ente< prise, publishes about 240 verses of a " poem " by Sir W. J. Steward, M H.R., having reference to • the " Island Picnic." Herewith some sample " Steward - isms " : An.] some went out with cameras, And some went botanizin', And-all—as Mrs Gamp would say—- " Enjoyed themselves surprisin'." When we went out to the cricketground A Native dance to see, But only saw— a Native boy Climb up a copoa-tree ; Where we saw the sacred maiden Who is tapued for a chief— You couldn't cal her pretty, She ran too much to beef. Now Berber —he .of Newtown And Wood, i,J P.ilmerston, Wir.h H : ( .. r,v M Willis, Anil Rig;,' n•..!■;. J uh'i.'Vi in. Went all into that fatal rooin, With whiskers dark ov fair. With beards and with moustaches, , And came out without a hair; j Their noses all seemed longer, , They had large expanse of cheek, Denuded of its ornaments For many and many a week. Is it because they seek again Departed charms of youth, In view of dark-eyed Island girls ? I wonder what's the truth !
