The Bruce publicans closed, pending the decision ot the Appeal Court. In Newtown the 'hotels remained open, and the police purchased liquor with a view to future proceedings against the publicans. In Ashburton the Colonial Secretary instructed the railway refreshment "bar to close. He also revoked the club charter. The club bar is closed, but liquor* ia being sold in the rooms, . in order to test the right of the Oolo- "■ oial Secretary in revoking the charter. Mr Miller is presenting a petition to ' Parliament for compensation to 13 hotels in Dunedin which were closed by reduction. The Appeal Court deals with the < licensing cases next week, A passenger from Tasmania has de , ▼eloped a mild form of small-pox in Wellington. There is another suspicious case. Both patients have been strictly quarantined. The Premier will propose Mr ' .Miller as chairman of committees in
