MINING NEWS.

The work of lengthening the ladder of the Golden River Coy.'s dredge will be finished about the end of the present week. The manager (Mr J. Si riders) has subj'Cted the dredge to a thorough overhaul, and, when the repairs are completed, the machinery •will be in first-class order. Previously the dredge had been running with the driving gear out of line, and it was found necessary to shift the engine in order to bring the driving pulleys true. The dredge should be ready to resume work about the end of next •week.

The work of re-erecting the pontoons of the Fourteen-mile Oo.'s new dredge is well advanced, and a start will be made within a few days to put on the machinery. The dredge will probably be ready to start about the end of July.

Mr W. Baird has been appointed engineer on the Monte Ohristo dredge. The new oil engine is being fitted up on the Molyneux Falls dredge. The directors of the Hartley and Riley Company have declared a dividend of 2s 6d per share. This is the 22nd dividend for which this wonderful dredge is responsible, and brings the total disbursed in dividends up to £63,375, or JB9 15s' returned for every £1 of original capital invested. The company's reserve fund stands at present at £1,500. The Unity dredge stopped at the latter end of last week to allow of necessary repairs being made to the screen. The dredge will be ready to resume work about the end of the week. Good wash was struck before the dredge stopped.

The Monte Ohristo dredge resumed ■work last Saturday. The Merrimac dredge, recently purchased by the Reeves's Propriety Company, arrived in Greymouth per 6 & Rimu last week, and is now shifted ou to the company's claim. The dredgemaster of the Molyneux Kohinoor dredge reported last Thursday that prospects were getting better as they worked into the east bank, being" the best he had ever seen in that part of the river, possibly equal to three-figrure returns. -^ Toe Perseverance No 1 dredge r£ eumed work on Tuesday afternoon.
