Borough Council.
The first meeting of the newly elected Council for the Borough of Alexandra was held on Monday evening last, when there were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr Jas. EJelman), Crs Spencer, Anderson, Ryan, Appleton, Schaumann, M'Math, Laidlaw and Buchanan. The newly-elected councillors made the statutory declaration and took their seats. The Mayor said he was pleased to aee so many of the old council returned. They had in the past did their best in the interest of the ratepayers, and he hoped that under the new Council the work would proceed as harmoniously as had been the case hitherto. He congratulated the new membets on their election, and felt sure they would be an acquisition to the Council. Cr Spencer also spoke welcoming the new members. Cis Buchanan and Laidlaw replied. Inward correspondence was read as under:— —From Mr Jas Rivers, in reference to the complaint nude re non-supply of water. —From Mr D o*Rourke, contractor, complaining that the Council had failed to keep him supplied with water at the reservoir, and intimating that he intended to charge the Corporation with his expenses for four days during which the water was off. —From Mr Jas Howie, r« water supply to him from the Borough race. —From Mr R Hay, engineer, stating that the Fort Sonachan with the pipes for the waterworks on board commenced unloading at Dunedin wharf on the 27 th inst. —From Mr 6 B Aitken complaining of the insanitary condition of portion of Mullingar street. —From Mrs Cameron n rates due by R Hutton, and now charged to her. —From Mr A Drummey r« charge made for water. A good deal of discussion took place regarding Mr O'Rourke's complaint, re son-supply of water, and eventually it was moved by Or Appleton, seconded by Cr M'MathjOnd carried unanimously —That Mr Rivers be written to and informed that if he does not supply the water as required by the agreement, an action will be taken by the Council. On fhe motion of Cr Ryan, seconded by Ci Anderson, it was resolved that Mr Howie be written to, asking him to settle the amount owing for water. On the motion of Cr Buchanan, seconded by Cr Ryan, it was resolved that the action of the town clerk in replying to Mr Drummey re amount owing for water be approved. Resolved—That the town clerk write to Mr Hay, asking him to carefully inspect the pipes now being made in Dunedin.
The town clerk was iostmcted te reply to Mrs Cameron, explaining the position with regard to the rates owing by B. Hatton, and now charged against the property. Cr Appleton directed the Council's attention to the filthy condition of Ennis-street, and to the bad state of the culvert near the police camp. On the motion of Cr Ryan, seconded by Cr Laid la w, it was resolved that the dayman be requested to have the street cleaned, and that the manager of tie Alexandra Lead dredge be asked tc enlarge the culvert near the Police Station.
Kesolved—That Mr W. J. Scott be appointed Borough printer. Crs Buchanan, Scbaumann, Byan, Spencer, and Appleton were appointed as the Works Committee for the ensuing three months. Crs Spencer, Byan, and Laidlaw were appointed a Finance Committee for the ensuing year. On the motion of Cr Byan, seconded by Cr M'Math, it was resolved that the Council act as a Board of Health for the Borough. Resolved—That the Works Committee visit the street near Messrs Hesson's and Thomson's residences, and also the street near Mr Bringans' residence, and, if thought necessary, that steps be taken to have repairs effected. Cr Scbaumann brought up the question regarding the town clerk's salary, which was held over from the previous meeting.
After several councillors had spoken, Cr Schflumann moved, and Or Anderson seconded—That the town clerk's sahry be increased to £IOO per annum. The motion was carried unanimously. The statement of balances was read aa follows:—Dr General Account, £B3B 12s 4d; Cr Cemetery Account, £sl lis sd; Cr Charities Account, £9O 15s 3d ; Cr Library Account, £lO 2s 7d ; Cr Contractors' Deposits, £65 17s; Cr Interest Account, £291 17s 2d ; total debit balance, £328 8s lid. The following accounts were passed for payment:—W. R. Fawcett, 10s; J. Travis, £1118s; J. Young, £l7 6s 8d; F. Young, £ll 17s Id; G. B. Aitken, £4 0s 3d; total, £45 12s. Sis ©warnl thtfirtt*
