Borough Council.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening Inst, when 1 there were present :—His Worship the I Mayor (Mr James Ivelman), Ore Ryan, sSchaumann, Richards, Appleton, iriderson, Spencer, M'Matli, and Fraser. The minutes of the provious mooting were read and confirmed. Inward correspondence was read as follows : —From Mr A. Truesdale, Matakanui, with referenco to water rights in Chatto Creek. —From Mr J. R. Bartholomew, enclosing sub-lease of portion of section 12, block xiv, from J. F. Sawyer to the Alexandra Rifle Volunteer Corps, for consent of the Corporation. —From Mr Malcolm Macdonald, asking the Council's acceptance of a Union Jack, as a gift from himself to the town.
—From Mr James Rivers, with reference to complaints made re the non-supply of water.
—From Mr R. Hay, engineer, giving statement of original estimates in connection with the waterworks, and also a statement of the expenditure now likely to be incurred. The inward correspondence was received and the outward approved. Mr S. Cameron waited on thg, Council with reference to the opening of a street through his paddock. Resolved—That the Work's Committee meet Mr Cameron and visit the ground through which the road is proposed to be made. On the motion of Or Fraser, seconded by Or Schaumann—That Mr A. Truesdale be written to thanking him for the information received re the Borough water rights. Moved by Or Richards, seconded by Or Spencer—That the Mayor and the town clerk look into the matter of the sub-lease of James F. Sawyer to the Alexandra Volunteer Corps, and report to the Council.—Carried.
Moved by Cr Ryan, seconded byCr M'Math—That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr M. Macdonald for his kind donation of a Union Jack to the town.—Carrier].
Moved by Cr M'Math, seconded by Or Appleton, and carried unanimously —That Mr Rivers be notified that the Council expect the water to be delivered at the reservoir site as provided by the agreement.—Carried. Moved by Cr Schaumann, and seconded by Or Anderson—That the resolution levying rates be confirmed, and that Crs Spencer and Richards be appointed to sign the rate book.— Carried.
Moved by Cr M'Math, and seconded by Cr Richards—That the engineer be instructed to inform M'Kechine and Fleming that the penalty will be enforced immediately the contract time for Contract No. 2 has expired.— Carried.
Moved by Or Appleton, and seconded by Or Schaumann—That Mr Hesson be written to stating that the Council has no power to lease him the ground at the back of block xm, and that if he fences it in he will do so at his own risk.—Carried. Resolved —That the Works Committee visit the race to the Chinese Camp, and also the footpath at Mr Foobey's corner, with power to act.
Cr Schaumann said he would like to bring before the Council the question of. increasing the town clerk's salary. The present town clerk had proved himself to be a highly competent officer, and the Council would be fortunate if they retained his services. A good deal of extra work had been incurred late'y in connection with the waterworks and other matters, and he (the speaker) thought the town clerk's salary should be raised to £IOO. The Mayor, and Crs Ryan, Richards, Spencer, and Appleton spoke, endorsing the ' remarks made by Cr Schaumann regarding the satisfactory and efficient manner in which the town clerk had discharged his duties. Finally, Cr T?yan moved and Cr A ppleton seconded—That it be a recommendation to the incoming Council to consider the question of raising the town clerk's salary to £IOO per annum. Cr Appleton said, as this was the 'ast meeting of the present Council, that they should congratulate themselves on the fact that Mr Kelman had consented to accept the office of Mayor for another term. The speaker referred in complimentary terms to the able manner in which the Mayor had discharged the duties of his office, both inside and outside of the Council chamber.
Several other councillors also spoke in similar terms.
The following accounts were passed for payment :—W. R. Fawcett, £1; W. Theyers and Sons, 6s 6d ; " Australasian " newspaper, £1 6s; E. J. Terry, £l2 ; total, £l4 12s 6d. The Council then rose.
