MINING NEWS.

The liver has been falling steadi'y during the past week,

Mr James Samson will sell the Gunion'« Beach dredge and c'aim by auction, at Dunedin, on Thursday next.

The New Golden Beach Hydraulic E evatmg and Dredging Company are putting the dredge in thorough repair, and the overhauling will be pushed forward as speedily a possible so as to get the dredge on the rich wash when opening out. The public have taken up more than the required number of ■hares offered them and so put the company in a position to thoroughly renovate the dredge and make a start to work the claim.

A case of importance to dredging companies occupied the attention of the Warden's Court at Alexandra on Monday and Tuesday, the hearing being a lengthy one. The case was one in which the Unity Dredging Company sued the Davis Bend Com pany for damage caused by the latter company's dredge carrying away the atern line of the Unity dredge, when passing down the river, and thereby destroying the tail chute. The plaintiffs alleged negligence on the part of tbe mister of the Davis Bend dredge, in not giving notice of his intention to pass, in not having the buckets laced up, and in not taking up such a position as would enable him to have a clear view of the passage. For the defence it was alleged that the line of the Unity dredge was not lowered sufficiently, and that therefore the Unity Company was responsible for the accident, and further that it was not incumbent on the Davis Bend Company to give notice. The Warden upheld the contention of the plain tiffs solicitor, and awarded damages to the extent of the actual amount paid for a new chute. Mr Angus Kennedy, who is in charge of the work of lengthening the ladder of New River Molyneux Oo.'s dredge, on behalf of Messrs A. and T. Burt, expects to have the job completed this week. The Dunstan Lead dredge obtained the very satisfactory return of 590z odd last week. Good returns may be expect-d for sime time to come. The return of 40oz from the Sandy Point dredge last week was a highly satisfactory one. The Unity dredge has been closed down until the river falls to a more suitable level.
