MINING NEWS.
Owing to the rains up country, the river has risen a gooJ deal duringtbe week, the height at the Alexandra bridge last eveuiug being i above «norml." At the Supreme Court, in Chambers, last Friday, the following business was dealt with: —ln the matter of the Companies Act, 1882, and the Sandy Point Gold Dredging Company.— Petition to remove liquidator.—Sir W. C. Macgregor (ins'ructed by Mr Adams) s*id: I am instructed on behalf of the petition rs to absolutely withdraw all charges of fraud and improper conduct on the part of the ijBWMN the other persons whom -ucb charges are made in the petitiou.— Mr Hosking: I appear for the liquidator, and I have no objection to the petition being withdrawn. Leave to withdraw granted; Mr Win. Woalhouse, formerly dredgemast r of the Long Valley dredge, has been appointed to a similar position on the New Bendigo dredge, for which Mr John Alexander has been appointed engineer. The directors have decided to shorten the ladder by 10ft, as they are of opinion that with the inserted portion it is not strong enough to carry its own weight, and its efficiency would be considerably impaired unless the company went to great expcise to strengthen it. The inserted portion, will however, be kept on board, and if it is found necessary to use it while the dredge is operating in the basin, it can be fitted up without much trouble. After the piece is taken off the ladder will still be 73ft in length, or sft longer than was the ladder on the old Bendigo Company's dredge after it had been extended, so that ft should be of ample length to work the chum to advantage. Judgment giv n at Wellington, on Thursdav, in an action brought by the Mapourika River Gold Dredging Oom-
pany ag inst three of the directors—: .Messrs Oram?, Tait, and Palmer—in which the claim was for calls, disclosed a curious position. The plaintiff was' non-suited on the ground that as the defendants as directors had not paid their calls they could not be sued as shareholders. The law provides that shareholders cannot be, sued unless directors' calls are paid. The Unity dredge has resumed work on the eastern side of the river, about ten chains above the lower boundary * of the company's claim. - The Chicago dredge, which has been stopped for the past six weeks undergoing an overhaul, will be ready to resume work by the end of the present week. :• - ; ?
