The Herald. Alexandra, Thursday, March. 12, 1903. WORKERS COMPENSATION FOR ACCIDENTS ACT.
Previous to last session of Parliament .some doubt existed .as.to whether the porkers- for Accidents Act of A I9OO appliedl tot agriculturists, amending Act passed Ftet year sets at rest all doubt on this point. Section 5 of the amending act states that " from and after the commencement of this act the principal act shall apply to the employment of workers in agriculture." The act applies even if the worker be employed at other than, purely agricultural work;:; and." agriculture "is defined as including *' hpir* ticulture, forestry, and the use of land for any purpose of husbandry, incluI sive of the keeping or breeding of live ! stock." When work is done by contract, section 15 of the principal act applies, and this provides that both the principal and the contractor shall be deemed to be employers of the worker, and-shall; be jointly and seve rally liable; but the principal shall be entitled to be idemnified by the contractor. The act further provides that the compensation to which a worker is entitled under the principal act shall be a weekly not exceeding] fifty per cent. : of his weekly? earnings. This payment is to be made during the incapacity of the worker but must not exceed £2 per week, and the total liabiity of the employer is. limited t0£300. ; also amended by making tjbe employer liable in pspect , : of an injury which worker for one week, yitf-eft-two asj formerly.:' The "amehdirlg into force on the Ist of April next.
