Borough Council.

The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, when there were present—Or Spencer, deputy-mayor (in the ' chair), Crs Eraser, Richards, M'Matb, Anderson, and Ryan. Inward correspondence was read as follows: —From Mr R. Hay, in reference to contracts. —From the Chief Engineer of Roads, stating that he had been directed by the Hon. Minister of Land* to acknowledge receipt of the OouncilV letter of 13th January, urging that the bridges over the Manuherikia River, between Ophir and Alexandra, may b* made suitable for ordinary as well as railway traffic. The writer stated that ,the request would be considered when t.h« Estimates for 1903 4 were being compiled. . ' —From Messrs M'Kechnie and Fleming, stating that the delay in commencing their contract was owing bo the act that the special iron plates required for the pipes had to be ordeied from Home. From Mr J, Theyers, notifying the Council that he intended to fence sections 3 and 4, block xxxi. —From the Molyneux Hydraulic Company, stating that the. company would require four heads of water from March Ist. On the motion of Or M'Math. seconded by Or Ryan, Messrs M'Kechnie and Fleming were granted two months' extension of time for the completion of Waterworks Contract No. 2

In reference to the notice from Mi J. Theyers, it was resolved that Mr Tohill be asked to push on his contract for the formation of the road in uppei Tarbert-street as speedily as possib e Or Richards moved and Or M'Matb seconded —That the Works Committee visit Tohiil's contract, with a view to ascertaining the amount of gravel required, and report to next meeting/ Carried. . ' In reference to the letter from the Molyneux Hydraulic Company, some f doubt was express d as to the capability of the race carrying .-sufficient water without first being cleaned out. It was resolved tnat the raceman be written to, asking him to report as to how long the cleaning-out of the race would take, and also the probable cost. It was Reported that several of those using water from the Borough race were in arrears for water rates!; H f!" Or Richards moved, and Cr M'Math seconded—ThgJ; all those in arrears for water from the town race be sued for the amounts due.—Carried. .. ■> Moved by Cr Richards, and seconded by Cr M'Math—That the town clerk interview the borough solicitor with "regard to the position in regard to Mrs Colgan's leasehold sections (on which several .years" arrears of rf>nt is owing), and-, if the position is favourable he be authorised to call for tenders for the unexpired terms, of the leases.— Carried. -luf'i ■■"■ ". •.

It was resolved, on the motion of Or M'Math, seconded by Or Anderson, that in future the Council refuse to anprove of any application for a residence area within the Borough. The statement of balances was i-ead a.« follows:—Dr General Account, .£758 14« 3d; Or Interest Account, £233 14* 3d; Or Charities Ac count, £9O Os 4d ; Cr Cemetery Account, £47 .Bs'; 6d ; Cr Library Account, £4 17s sd; Or Pound Account, £5 2s; total indebtedness, £377 lis 9d. Waterworks Loan Account: Or balance in bank. £417 19s 9d ; on fixed deposit, £2650. The fdl'owing accounts were passed for payment:—W. R. Fawcett, £4 lis; Otago Central Foundry, 2s 6d ; L«nds and Surve}' Department, £7 10s ; Library Insurance, £1 19s ; J. D. Thomson, 2s 6d ; «Daily Times," £3 sr; F, Young. £8 5s 9d: Joseph Young, £l4; A. Tavlor, £l6; E. J. Terry, £l2 ; total,£67 ljs 9d. - The Council then rose. -
