Matakanui Notes.

(From our own Correspondent.) WEDDING. r. 2? Tue « d , a y> the 13th inst., Miss* Catherine Mellor, youngest daughter '" l 5 £ £ te Mr John Me,lor » and of Mrs Mellor, of this town, was married - 4 to Mr Frank Messent, of Wedderburn. The ceremony took place at the residence of the bride's brother at an early hour in the morning, the Bev. Father 0 Dea officiating. The wedding was a very quiet one, only a few intimate friends being [resent. After the ceremony, the happy couple left to catch the train for Dunedin, A large number of friends from far and near assembled in the hall in the evening, at the invitation of Mr and Mrs Wall (the bride's sister), to celebrate the auspicious occasion. What with songs, dances and recitations, together with excellent and abundant refreshments, a very enjoyable tone was spent. Mr J. Truesdale (violin) and Miss Wall (piano) supplied excellent music, while Mr J. Pauley made an efficient M.O. The happy couple received many useful, valuable, and ornamental presents, and that they may long enjoy the best of health, happiness, and prosperity, ig the ardent wish of their many friends throughout the district.

ACCIDENTS. Quite a chapter of accidents have occurred in our, locality during the last few months. The last one happened a little more than a week ago, when Mr G. Sutherland, son of Mrs A. Sutherland, of this town, had the misfortune to get his leg broken. It appears that Mr Sutherland (who, by, the way, drives the Matakanui draught-horse team) was bringing in the horses in the morning to feed them preparatory to going to work, when one of the animals lashed out and kicked the unfortunate young man between the knee and the ankle, breaking the bane. Dr M'llroy was at once sent for, andarrived at the station in less than an hour from the time the accident happened. That says a great deal for the* promptness of the doctor, and the alacrity of the groom who was the messenger ; it also shows, by the way, the sort of hacks Mr Laidlaw keeps in his stable, the distance from the station to the doctor's residence being six miles. Before the doctor arrived, Mr Laidlaw had the young man rigged up on a stretcher, and the bone put in its place, he having had a good deal of experience in these things, having had his own leg broken twice. This was a great help to the doctor, and he had the injured limb in splints in a very short time. lam pleased to say that the sufferer, who had a very bad time of it for a week or so, is now getting ;on very well, His many friends will be glad to see George hopping round again soon. Mr John Hamilton, who accidentally shot himself with a pea, rifle a short time ago, is now all right again. The doctor, after locating the bullet, decided not to remove it. WEATHER. At last we are having a taste of perfect summer weather. The last few days have just been splendid—calm and warm —and quite a treat after the horrible, changeable weather we have had for some time past. CROPS. Although rather later than usual in going in, the crops in the district have every appearance of being well up to the usual standard
