Nevis.

(From Oar Own Correspondent). _. It is with deep Borrow I have to report the death of Mrs Chas. Scott, third daughter of Mrs Elliott, of the Nevis Hotel. The d eceased lady, who pave birth to a son on Dec. 20th, was reported to be doing well ; y then came rumours that she had taken a turn for the worse, The doctor and a trained nurse were sent for, and all that was possible for human skill to do was done tq save tier life; but, alas, human effort was of ho avail. The voice which none can question called her away, and she, entered into her rest peacefully, on Saturday morning last. Although it was half expected, her death came as a .severe shock to all. One wonders at the mysterious ways of Providence—why one who could so ill be spared should be called so young (she was little ones who so sorelyneed a mother's care and love should be deprived of it, are mysteries which we cannot solve. Truly we walk by faith. The deceased lady leaves a family of nine, -the youngest but a few days old. The hearts of all go out in sympathy to the bereaved husband and children, and to the aged mother and the other relatives. A short service was held in the home by Mr W. Masters, who spoke a few comforting words from the text, " I will not leave you comfortless; I will come unto you," and several hymns were sung. Several, pretty wreaths were sent by sympathising friends. The funeral left for Cromwell this (Tuesday) morning at 10 o'clock, al| the dredges being stopped for a few hours and all other work suspended, whilst the inhabitants from far and near met to show" their last token of appreciation and 'respect to the' memory of one who was in every way worthy. Many rode or drove in conveyances, whilst a great number followed on foot for Rome distance. .*The> remains .were interred in the Oromwell cemetery, wherp those of deceased's father- (the late Mr Elliott) lie.
