The above society's twenty-first annual gathering, held on the recreation ground on Thursday last, was one of the most successful functions of the kind yet held in Alexandra. The weather was fine, and the attendance very large, notwithstanding the fact >that many of our citizens were absent on holiday tours, whilst the counterattraction provided by the Blacks races induced a great number of other —shall we call them unpatriotic— Alexandraites to forsake the local sports. However, as we have said, the attendance was very satisfactory, the amount taken at the gates—£ls 13s (Jd—being slightly in excess of last year. The entries, on the whole, were not quite so large as last year, but the handicapping was excellent, and as a consequence some exciting races were witnessed. The pony races caused a great deal of excitement, and sufficient money to provide an additional race was willingly subscribed by the onlookers. The wrestling events provided gome splendid bouts, and these were eagerly watched by the spectators. Altogether, it may be said unreservedly, that thos<? present were highly pleased with the day's sport; provided by the Society, and the committee are to be congratulated on the success that attended their efforts. The several office-bearers worked hard for the success of the meeting, and all the preliminary arrangements wdre carried out with a due attention XO detail. The events were got off promptly, and the interest of the spectators was maintained throughout the day. , The prize for general excellence among the competitors was won by John Carroll, and the silver cup for most points in the running events by J. Cairns.

The Alexandra Brass Band, under Bandmaster Bringans, played a number of selections during the day,' and the enlivening music was much appreciated. Three or four pipers were also •in attendance, and the bagpipe music discours d added much to the enjoyment of the spectators. The publican's booth was under the * charge of Mr Gay, and Mrs Dawson presided at the fruit stall. Following are detailed results: — !00yds Youths' Handicap. First 15s, second 10s, third os. W.
