THE MOA SO. 1 DREDGE. (from the "New Zealand Mine* Record") A report having been received as to the condition of the MoaNo- 1 dredge, which has been lying idle on the Clutha River, below the Alexandra Bridge, for about three months, the Inspector of Mines has been requested to direct the attention of tie dredgeaaeter, or the secretary of the Clyde Dredging Company, to the provisions of clause If of Regulation 83, and inform them that the regulation will be acted upon upon unless the pontoons are either repaired or the dredge removed into a sale position within one month from the date of notice. Clause 12 reads as follows: la any caw where the Inspector is of opinion that a dredge b unsafe, and aboald be impended w condemned, be shall make report thereon to the Warden, whereupon the f cllowiEg provisions shall apply : (a.) The Warden may brae a summons requiring the owner of the dredge to show cause why it should not be suspended or condemned. (8.) On the return of the and after full enquiry and investigation, the Warden may, by order, either suspend the dredgefrom working until it is renovated end senflsmd safe to his satisfaction or condamn it altogether, or give such other direction in the premises as he thinka fit; and it shall be the duty of the owner of the dredge, aad all other persona concerned, to obey such orders. The Moa No. 1 was a well-built dredge when first launched eight years ago, and, through having iron-bark stringers and side beams, she haa lasted longer than might have been otherwise the case. Her dimensions are: Length, 90ft; beam, 28ft; depth, sft; planking 2|in. The machinery was put in perfect order shortly before cksJEng down, and it was said to be the mtefitikmof the company to work her ob the portion of the

claim. . Tht planking throughout is ef red redpine, with the exception of three tide planks between wind and water, which are of kaari, and are quite sound; but the red pine planking j is for the greater part unsound and sodden, carrying in places a fungoid growth, while in some places, both planking and beams, on examination, proved to be rotten to the core. . The present cause of deterioration is attri buted to the faet of the dredge lying idle, the the absence of constant dampness of the decks as when working having caused dry-rot to set in, so that under the influence of the aircurrents through the pontoons the timber is fast giving way. In the Inspector's opinion, as a working dredge the Moa would be a constant menace to the lives aboard her, and as she stands at present die isa source of danger to the fleet of dredges an the gorge below.—.[The dredge has been removed to a safe anchorage at the mouth of the Mannherikia River.— Ed. A.H.]
