R.S.A.

WAR PAINTINGS APPLICATION TO DEPARTMENT An application to the Internal Affairs Department for a number of war paintings by New Zealand artists will be made by the Ashburton Returned Services’ Association. This was decided at a meeting of the executive of the branch last evening. It was proposed to hang the paintings ’ in the new hall. v' -

An invitation to attend future quarterly conferences with the Geraldine, Waimate and South Canterbury branches of the R.S.A. was received by the Ashburton Returned Services’ Association at a meeting of the executive last evening. “These conferences are attended by South Canterbury associations and their branches and we are not a branch of the South Canterbury Association,” said Mr A. C. Robinson. From his observations at Christchurch conferences, lie thought that some advantages would be obtained .from attending, said Mr W. G. Welsh/ “Are we going to add to our problems by attending these conferences?” asked Mr J. P. McDonnell. “We have enough problems here, without going further afield,” he said. “We must be prepared to go if we say we are going to,” said Dr. N. E. H. Fulton. It was decided to -request advice as to what the objects of the conferences were, before a decision to attend was made. A letter of thanks was received from the Wanganui R.S.A., to which the Ashburton association had sent a photograph of the soldiers’ cemetery here. Reports were given by the conveners of the benevolent, billiards, building, rehabilitation and hospital committees . The last-named reported 31 visits to hospital during the month. The building committee stated that further difficulties experienced still 1 made it impossible to forecast when the concert hall would be completed. Letters of thanks for Dundee parcels were read, one of which characterised the parcels scheme as ‘“a grand thought,”’’ and another, written in January, gave a vivid idea of the cold of the Scottish winter.
