TROTTING MATINEE AT WASHDYKE
TWO-YEAR-OLDS PROVIDE THRILL Horses from as far afield as Methven and Oamaru, representing more than 30 stables, took part in a matinee meeting at Washdyke yesterday. The weather was cool but fine, and there was a fair attendance of spectators as guests of the Timaru Trotting Club. The main purpose of the meeting was to stage an elimination contest in connection with the Timaru Nursery Stakes and this trial provided one of the finest finishes ever seen on the Washdyke trotting track. First place
went to Shanigan, trained locally and driven by W. A. Thomas. Second place went to Kapeen from J. Grice’s Tinwald, stable; third to Regal Parade, trained by R. J. Cleave at Oamaru. The other two qualifying places went to Safeguard and Taradale, both trained by D. L. McGregor for Mr W. T. Lowe at Hinds. Trophies were given for first and second horses in each event. The Nursery Stakes Trial, the feature event of the day, saw 10 two-year-olds endeavour to qualify for the Timaru classic. All began reasonably well except Safeguard. Lady French made the running from Kapeen, and t round the top Lady French led from Kapeen, Safeguard and Shanigan. With a furlong to run Lady French appeared to be winning, but the field closed up rapidly, and in a thrilling finish seven horses went under the wire in a cluster. Shanigan (W. A. Thomas, Washdyke) appeared from the stand to have won, but it was impossible' to place the others. The judge’s verdict went to Shanigan, Kapeen, Regal Parade, Safeguard and Credit Chief in that order, Lady French being beaten into sixth position. The winner’s time was 2.20. a race for horses with a 3.52 rating, Sir Carol and Empire Lady led Klondyke and Our Flicka past the mile, and they raced past the stand in pairs. Sir Carol’s condition gave out at the top, and Empire Lady (A. J. Wilson, Methven) took sole charge with Our Flicka and Klondyke following. Empire Lady stayed on to win by a length from Klondyke, who was half a length in front of Banquet Hall. Joan McKinney was fourth. The third heat of the maiden pace class was won by Hoity Toify, driven by C. V. May (Methven).
