SALMON AT HIGHBANK

INFORMATION FOR ANGLERS STATEMENT ISSUED Salmon in the Highbank tailrace Avas the subject of a statement by the chairman at last evening’s monthly meeting fif the council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society. Mr Kelly stated that there still appeared to be some misunderstanding in connection with the netting of salmon in this race. Anglers, he said, should understand that the Marine Department controlled the salmon, and that the netting operations at Highbank Avere being carried out by that department, which had asked the society for its assistance and co-opera-tion. A certain quantity of the fish netted Avas being sold on the market, and the entire proceeds Avould go to the department. Where possible a number of salmon Avould be returned to the river. The society Avas gaining nothing, but Avas prepared to assist, particularly as it was hoped that as many, fish as possible Avould be returned to the river to spawn. The chairman also reported on the conference of South Island societies recently held, and stated that a further approach would be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs for the abolition of royalties on A'ermin, and the transfer of funds so expended to the extension of research.
